Tim Moore, John and Penelope Biggs Distinguished Professor of Classics and Chair of the Department of Classics, recently delivered a paper titled “Meter and Music in Greek Tragedy” at the University of Cincinnati.
Presented as part of the University of Cincinnati's Symposium: Ancient Music and its Modern Performance, the paper explored the close relationship between poetic meter and musical performance in Greek tragic drama. Professor Moore examined how metrical patterns shaped the musical and emotional dimensions of tragedy, illuminating the ways ancient audiences experienced these works as performances integrating poetry, music, and movement.
Professor Moore’s presentation reflects the department’s ongoing engagement with performance studies, ancient music, and literary analysis, and highlights the strong scholarly connections between Washington University and Classics programs nationwide.
